Homeward Bound

When Danny awoke the following morning, his stomach twisted with anticipation. He rose and walked slowly to the massive window of his room, gazing out over the beautiful garden of the Silver Estate. Elegant trees stood beside a hot spring, with snow and ice sculptures artfully placed nearby. A few servants moved back and forth, setting up tables and preparing for the day.

Danny folded his hands behind his back and heard a soft knock at the door.

"Master Youngblood?" A servant slowly opened the door a crack. "Might I come in?"

Danny turned as a man slowly entered. "I'm not a master."

He was exceptionally tall with eyebrows that slanted sharply downward. Nevertheless, his face was kind as he held out a hand. Danny shook it, and the servant returned to an attitude of upmost reverence.

"That said," Danny continued. "I'll admit that I like the way it sounds."

The man flashed a thin smile. "You are a guest of Master Silver. That makes you a Master to me, regardless of your rank with the mages."

Danny flushed red as he realized his mistake. "What can I do for you?"

"It's what I can do for you." The servant bowed slightly. "My name is Boniface. I shall be your primary attendant today, and shall never be more than ten steps away. I assume that Master Silver spoke to you about our quest today?"

Danny nodded. "Yes, he did. You're who he trusts?"

"I was Master Silver's attendant from the moment he was born." Boniface gave a small nod of his head. "He grew up with me. No one knows him better than I do, perhaps save his own mother."

Danny smiled. "Then I'm sure this will all go well."

"I dearly hope so." Boniface walked up to gaze out the window as well. "This estate may seem extravagant, but it represents something far more than a reclusive, wealthy family. This estate represents the ideals of the Empire, from a time long past. It represents the way that things were done at its height, back when a good name and a firm handshake were all that you needed to get along in the world. I will not have that change, not today, not ever. Not on my watch."

He turned to Danny. "I would be happy if history makes no mention of my name, provided that I kept the estate peaceful enough that no mention need be made."

"I understand." Danny drew in a deep breath. "What's the plan, then?"

"Well, first, we must get you ready." Boniface clapped his hands, and the door swung open.

A train of servants walked in, carrying with them a suit of clothes. Danny looked at them, and his jaw dropped.

They were a far cry from the standard-issue Academy robes, that was for sure. Form-wise, they took the form of an elegant coat with diamond buttons and long tails, much the same as Abraham himself wore. The pants were cleanly pressed, and had a number of gemstones sewn into them as well. Thick combat boots looked more than capable
